The Last Haunting

I didn’t want to look at you.
I was afraid you’d disappear right before my eyes
go up in smoke like you’ve done in the thousands of stories I’ve written you into
and then set on fire.
You were high tension
adrenaline ride
quiet until you needed to be loud.
And then you were gone,
the last remnant of my life previously led,
the last whisper
–the last haunting.
